At the age of twelve (12), I experienced the incarceration of a family member. This experience caused devastation, financial hardship, confusion and a mix of other emotions within my family. Because of the unfamiliar situation we encountered, obtaining the necessary resources such as therapeutic support or crisis counseling was unknown. This traumatic experience caused a lot of emotional turmoil, such as shame, embarrassment, brokenness, uncertainty and fear. As a result, this was seen as a part of life and so the family normalized the experience.
As an adult woman, this traumatizing experience finds its way back into my life of another loved and dear family member. Because of a past life experience, the situation once again was normalized. It was later that I realized while involved in the behavioral health industry that normalizing a tragic experience is not normal and it can result in other internal issues if not addressed.
I realized when someone goes through a traumatic experience they need an outlet, a person who can relate to their situation and help them break through and find solace. My experience has motivated and inspired me to develop the vision and mission for this agency in hopes to help and support those who have experienced or who are encountering similar trauma related situations. I want you to know that you are not alone; that there is someone who understands the loss, emptiness, hurt, pain, shame and hopelessness; that you can and will overcome the overwhelming odds.
